Create spinning, glowing, light machines that hypnotize and amaze! Explore how electricity makes motors move and light emitting diodes illuminate. Participants combine whimsical craft materials and real electronic components to compose motorized inventions that really work! All electrified projects go home.
This project introduces makers to the properties of LEDs, motors, coin cell batteries and alkaline batteries. Makers experiment with placement of the motor and LEDs to intuitively understand balance and weight distribution. This project was invented by young makers in a 2013 summer program workshop and has been a staple in our classroom pop-up workshops ever since.
During out-of-school time this activity is perfect for family nights and on-site field trips for grades 2 and up.
